Sharon Rose's Travel Through Identity and Fashion

When Rose considers her early years, she says, "In retrospect, my life in Haifa was very simple: school, playing outside, going to eat at grandma's." These little pleasures, combined with the demands of the classroom, encouraged resilience and creativity. She remembers her early years kindly: "Ordinary stuff like climbing trees and playing with friends brought joy." Still, school made her uncomfortable a lot of times. "It was a place consistently pushing me to be 'normal,' and occasionally it made me feel like an alien." Her sense of alienation drove her to solace in a small group of friends who also felt different.

Fashion as Identity: Sharon Rose's Journey of Self-Expression

Rose started her love of fashion early, but social conventions complicated things. "I always loved improvising different characters," she says, remembering sleepover fashion presentations from early years. Still, a career in fashion seemed far off. She says, "As a young child, we Arabs just watched; I literally concluded that fashion careers were something that happened in America and Europe."

Rose's path into modelling was motivated by curiosity and a will to challenge conventions despite all the obstacles. She says, "There was not much of an industry to enter." She did, however, become fully engaged in the art of modelling and claiming her identity.

Multidisciplinary Art

More than a model, Sharon Rose is a multidisciplinary artist investigating fashion, performance, theatre, and history. "Fashion has always been a means of breaking out of my cage, of playing different scenarios," she says. Rose explores what it means to be human in a world going more and more automated and standardised by means of her multisensory media works. Her relationships with Palestinian artists have strengthened her ties to her background and turned her work into a potent story of cultural identification. Emphasising her dedication to significant, group work, she says, "I like to work on projects that allow me to add my own vision." She says, appreciating initiatives consistent with her values of empowerment and connection, "I'm not the mannequin type."

Cultural Identity

Rose's achievements cut across Palestinian boundaries. Her first freelance model from Palestine to take part in Milan and Paris Fashion Weeks is a historic accomplishment she hopes would motivate others. "I think what I bring to my platform is a sense that 'Oh, that's from Palestine?,'" she says, dispelling preconceptions and extending views of Palestinian identity.

Legacy and Vision

Rose counsels young Palestinians hoping for a career in fashion: "Get creative, do your homework, get in touch with others!" Reminding future artists to "always humble yourself and don't be hard on yourself," she stresses the need for teamwork and community support.

Rose's path is evidence of imagination and fortitude. She keeps seeing a hopeful future by means of fashion and art, creating venues for group discovery and self-expression. Her narrative reminds us that, in spite of hardship, imagination can blossom and link and empower people all around.
